Labor Doesn’t Have To Be A Pain
So there you are, attending to a mom in labor and trying to do your best to be supportive. If you’re feeling frustrated, relax, you’re hardly alone. No matter how much you may want to be helpful, the actual childbirth process is really a two person production. Mom and baby are doing the hard work, and feeling the discomfort that goes along with it. But you don’t have to feel completely useless; there are things you can do to make the process more comfortable.
Massage can be a tremendous benefit, whether to help ease the tension in her back or legs, or just to help reduce stress and aid in relaxation. Facial and foot massages in particular can be a great help during labor. Grape seed oil and lavender can both be used to promote relaxation. Counter pressure with your hands on the small of her back can also help to ease back pain, or you can try using a gliding massage tool to apply gentle pressure if your hands get tired.
Cool compresses can make her feel better, and make sure that she is drinking enough as becoming dehydrated can be dangerous. You can also encourage her to eat something for comfort, if it isn’t against doctor’s or midwife’s orders. This is especially important the longer that labor proceeds, so mom keeps up her strength.
If she is in a lot of discomfort you might want to help her change positions. Some positions can be more painful than others, so experiment to find one that is most comfortable for her. You can also apply a heating pad or warm blanket to her lower back to help ease pain. A squishy pillow, or boppy, can come in handy to help alleviate back strain. And water can be very good for pain relief, so the shower or tub might be the way to go.
No matter how inadequate you may feel, remember that the most important way you can support her is simply to be there. Even if she doesn’t want physical contact, having a friendly face in the room can make all the difference. And whatever else you do, make sure that both of you remember what you’re there for – a beautiful, healthy baby will make even the worst discomfort seem worthwhile!
