Adding Another Branch To The Family Tree

Having a baby is a life changing experience. New parents are thrust into a sea of responsibilities, pressures and adjustments which they may never have anticipated. As stressful as that may be the first time around, it can be even more so when you have another child or children. Experience does have its advantages as you’ll at least have some idea of what to expect, but the change to your family dynamic requires some careful consideration.

The primary concern is the age of your older child or children. While there is no one ideal for an age gap, most experts agree that you should wait at least two to three years between births. This is important not only for health reasons, as becoming pregnant again too soon after a previous birth can cause a strain on a mother’s system, but in order to assure that the older children are mature enough to make the adjustment to having a sibling. Having children too close together can be a stress on you and can prevent either of them from getting your full attention. Better to wait until the older child has at least some measure of independence so that you aren’t trying to be all things to all of your children at once.

Finances can also be an important consideration, especially in this day and age. Multiple children means more mouths to feed, more clothes to buy and more medical bills as well as more education costs. Are you financially prepared to take on that kind of increased responsibility? Will you be able to stay at home or will financial needs force you back to work? If the latter is true, then you will also need to figure expenses for daycare into your family budget.

Obviously, before becoming pregnant again you need to be sure that you are physically up to the challenge. Have a thorough checkup and make sure that any ailments you might have developed since your last pregnancy are under control. And remember to take your age into consideration – the older a women gets, the harder it is to become pregnant, which may be a factor in not waiting too long between children.

Having another child is going to be a change for the whole family, so it is important to make sure that everyone is ok with it. Growing your family tree is a big job, but with a little cooperation from everyone there is no reason why you can’t successfully add a new branch!
